In the Peg

Since Thunder Bay I was able to find two extraordinary places to stay.  A freebie in a place called Barrick Ontario, where all I needed to do was drive up, set up, and then walk this beautiful expanse by a flowing river highway.  Trains going by during the night was actually soothing, waking up to a misty morning that broke into blue sky by the time I hit the road again.  Up Hwy 71 to Sioux Narrows for another grand slam stay at a provincial park campsite where there was plenty of lake water for Molly and I to swim in, and hot water to ease the itch from a building array of misquitoe bits around my neck - still getting bitten.  Last night was the highlight of this experience when I mistakenly decided to go out for a pee - swarmed!!! The one fault of Lake of the Woods district as I now recall.  I left early in the morning without coffee - that was extreme, but picked some up from Tims before going to the vets in Kenora - worms were appearing on Harnett back home, and Molly was looking itching there too so she now has a very clean gut.

Its great to be visiting Les and Joanne, and to see my nephew Mathew at full adult height and girth.  I will be here a few days before heading out south then West.

Some memorable pictures to follow..

just thoughts

No pics today.  It was quite cozy last night in the rain.  Windy driving so stopped at the Thunderbay lookout with the Terry Fox monument.  It brought back memories of actually seeing Terry on the highway running north along 69 I think or maybe it was 11 toward the French River.  He looked slow from my viewpoint in a car hauling canoes toward the French with my brother and a bunch of his friends from the boy's camp he worked at that summer (? when 81?)... but he had most determined and ernest expression on his sweaty reddened face - lounge, hop, lounge hop... don't think I really appreciated what I was seeing.
The monument made me cry.

Between Storms

Quite the storm last night at Superior Prov Park.  No issues with rain in the trailer but I think the bugs followed us in again.  I might just where my insect jacket to sleep in tonight!

I'm now just outside Nipegon at a camp called Stillwater - much cheaper than the prov parks at 20 dollars.  Again dealing with bugs, but they would be any where north.  I heard Thunderbay is experiencing flooding and there is more rain forecast for tonight. So I'll stay put - its abot 5:30 now and I obviously have internet!

Adding picks from yesterday and a bit today - stoping at Rainbow Falls - love the water shots;  earlier pics were of Sand River at the Prov Park...and also some pics of the lake - grand weather mostly.

North on 17

Its now 3 nights sleep in my trailer with Molly - she is a bit restless but I think its the misquitoes that managed to get settled in before closing the door. I should know - I have a few bites myself!

Beautiful few days - blue skys and water.  Spent the first two nights at Tobermory to get myself sorted.  Walked the trails and swam in Cyrus with the potch.  No complaints whatsoever.  Internet access has been limited so catching up from an outside patio at a Tim's near the Saulte.   I've enjoyed great meals from my back galley cook stove and the electric cooler is working from the trailer battery when I'm parked during the evening.  Much better to share pictures just to give you an idea of this great experience so far...

Trial Run - Sandbanks in May... and new plans

I started out with an earlier blog that describe my plans and how both dogs, Harnett and Molly would be coming along with me for the duration of my road trip this summer.  Well all three of us made it to Sandbanks driving my VW wagon with teardrop in tow - test run really for the longer journey out West this summer.  It was great, but I came to the conclusion after much lament that Harnett would be happier with my neighbours who have been such great dog minders in the past and love him!  The old guy at 13 years, might not enjoy the hot weather, long ride and over zealous antics of my other companion, Molly - just on the cusp of turning a year old.  So now just Molly and I for the 6 weeks I am planning on the road.

So Sandbanks was grand! Was able tovisit friends living in Prince Edward County - John and Brenda, and Doug and Rose - a real bonus to the trip.  Cooler weather mid-May with two dogs in the teardrop with me - it was warm!  Luckily the fans in the cab of the trailer will be working for the hotter weather.  The teardrop is now rigged up with a solar charged battery to run the fans and any small devices that may need recharging etc.  Camp stove is now securely connected up to a fuel source in the back galley, new wheels and tires, and even a new trailer jack that will make moving the trailer around a campsite that much easier... I suck at backing up the trailer so I suspect a lot of maneuvering of my rig will happen after I detach it from the back end of my car.

This is a solo flight so I am counting on connecting with people as I go - data now on my phone with emails etc, and phone access Canada wide... don't be surprised if I call you out of the blue.

A few snaps from my Sandbanks trip... just the beginning.  I leave for out west soon.

in two weeks.
This is the blog I stared with... some thoughts about Harnett and Molly included. http://dogshavemyback.blogspot.ca/
